Background of the Study

Hypertension is one of the leading causes of cardiovascular disease worldwide, and stress has been identified as a significant contributor to the development and exacerbation of hypertension (Chidi et al., 2024). In Nigeria, the prevalence of hypertension continues to rise, and stress is often cited as a key factor in the country's growing cardiovascular disease burden (Adebayo et al., 2023). Traditional interventions for managing hypertension typically focus on pharmacological treatment and lifestyle changes, but there is increasing recognition of the role of psychological factors, particularly stress, in managing blood pressure levels.

Mindfulness training, which involves cultivating a non-judgmental awareness of the present moment, has emerged as a promising intervention for managing stress. Mindfulness-based techniques have been shown to reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve overall health outcomes (Sani et al., 2023). Nurses, with their close contact with patients, are in a unique position to implement mindfulness interventions, providing education and support to help patients develop mindfulness skills to manage stress effectively.

In Abia State University Teaching Hospital, where hypertension is prevalent, the integration of mindfulness training into patient care could potentially improve stress management and, by extension, enhance hypertension control. However, while mindfulness has been studied in various contexts, the role of nurse-led mindfulness training specifically targeting hypertensive patients in Nigerian hospitals remains underexplored. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of mindfulness training provided by nurses in reducing stress levels among hypertensive patients, thereby potentially improving their blood pressure control.

Statement of the Problem

Hypertension is a major health challenge in Abia State, and stress is a well-documented contributor to the condition. Despite the availability of pharmacological treatments, stress continues to be a significant barrier to effective hypertension management. While mindfulness training has demonstrated effectiveness in reducing stress and improving health outcomes, there is limited research on the impact of nurse-led mindfulness interventions for hypertensive patients in Nigerian healthcare settings. This study seeks to fill this gap by evaluating the effectiveness of mindfulness training by nurses on stress levels among hypertensive patients at Abia State University Teaching Hospital.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of mindfulness training by nurses in reducing stress levels among hypertensive patients in Abia State University Teaching Hospital.
  2. To evaluate the relationship between stress reduction through mindfulness training and improvements in blood pressure control among hypertensive patients.
  3. To explore patients' perceptions of the mindfulness training provided by nurses and its impact on their stress management.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is mindfulness training by nurses in reducing stress levels among hypertensive patients in Abia State University Teaching Hospital?
  2. Is there a significant relationship between the reduction in stress levels and improvements in blood pressure control among hypertensive patients?
  3. What are the perceptions of hypertensive patients regarding the mindfulness training provided by nurses?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Mindfulness training by nurses significantly reduces stress levels among hypertensive patients in Abia State University Teaching Hospital.
  2. There is a significant relationship between the reduction in stress levels and improved blood pressure control among hypertensive patients.
  3. Hypertensive patients report positive perceptions of the mindfulness training provided by nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study This study will focus on hypertensive patients at Abia State University Teaching Hospital and will assess the impact of nurse-led mindfulness training on stress levels and blood pressure control. The study is limited to this specific hospital, and findings may not be generalizable to other regions of Nigeria. Potential limitations include participant bias in self-reported stress levels and blood pressure measurements, as well as challenges in ensuring consistent mindfulness training across participants.

Definitions of Terms

  • Mindfulness training: A therapeutic intervention that encourages patients to focus on the present moment, increase self-awareness, and manage stress through techniques such as meditation and breathing exercises.
  • Hypertensive patients: Individuals diagnosed with high blood pressure, defined as a systolic blood pressure of 130 mmHg or higher or diastolic pressure of 80 mmHg or higher.
  • Stress levels: The degree of psychological tension and anxiety experienced by an individual, which can negatively impact health outcomes.
  • Abia State University Teaching Hospital: A medical facility located in Abia State, Nigeria, where this study will take place.
